Abuja:The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has debunked allegations of underage voting in the country, saying that the children in most cases were those who stood in for their parents.

The INEC Chairman said this on Tuesday, during the Quarterly Consultative Meeting with the Media.

He said; “On the issue of underage voting; nobody has till date come forward with any proof. These children you saw on the queue on election days were children standing in for their parents”.

He further disclosed that INEC is collaborating with the Nigerian Immigration Service to fish out and apprehend non Nigerians who register.

Professor Yakubu dispelled fears of a possible violent outcome in the Anambra State election, saying that fillers from security agencies assures of a hitch free process.

On those communities  still under Boko Haram attacks, the Chairman said that in a situation where the insurgency continues in these communities, the commission will allow the voting to take place in the various Internally Displaced Peoples, (IDP)camps as was done in the 2015 elections.

He further said that for individuals whose permanent voters cards are worn out, the commission will issue a new card but insisted that the writings on the cards are not so important as long as the chips are not damaged.

He noted that the continuous voters registration will continue until 60 days before the 2019 elections.

The INEC Chairman urged Nigerians to trust the election processes in the country, promising that INEC is committed to ensuring that their votes do not cease to count.
