Abuja- Angry workers who converged en masse to celebrate the 2017 May Day on Monday, took a drastic action against some government officials present at the Eagle square as they threw cans of water at them and disrupted the rally.
The workers were protesting against the current N18, 000 minimum wage which they said is long overdue for review and also questioned the absence of the Presidency from the event which they said showed no sign of concern on the part of the government for the Nigerian workers.
Meanwhile, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Minister of Labour Chris Ngige were publicly humiliated as every attempts by the former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole could not salvage the situation as he was also stopped by workers chanting “we no go gree”.
The event was disrupted for close to one hour by workers who barred government officials represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige from delivering government speech.
The Sight News reporter present at the venue of the event, noted that activities at the Eagle Square were suspended for over one hour, while workers were seen leaving the venue in droves.
He also noted that workers started throwing water cans at the officials when Police made attempts to drive them out of the podium.
However, Police armoured tanks and hot water Canon machines were deployed to disperse the rampaging workers.
The dignitaries were however smuggled out through the back door of the state box.
The NLC in a pre-May Day briefing had disclosed that the Minimum wage will take centre stage of this year’s Workers Day as they also called for the release of the remaining Chibok girls by their abductors
