Abakaliki: The Ebonyi newly elected chairmen of the 13 local government areas of the state have been sworn in by governor David Umahi.
The swearing-in ceremony which took place at the Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, came barely three days after the conduct of the local government election in the state, which saw their emergence.
Observers who monitored the election, including the media had described the election as free and fair, devoid of electoral violence.
The result declared by the state Independent Electoral Commission(EBSIEC), showed that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) swept the polls, both on chairmanship and councillorship positions.
Others sworn-in by governor Umahi include, some Special Assistants to the governor, Acting Accountant General, member of UBEB, EBHA Service Commission and local government advisory committee member, some coordinators of Development Centres, and Agricultural development Board members.
Umahi, while inaugurating the chairmen, charged them to work for the people, stressing that, “If you work for people, you work for God”.
He told them that the only legacy they could leave for posterity is projects, and not the context of sharing money.
His words,”You know there is context, before you went on break,(referring to council chairmen who made it second time),some of you did 3kms of concrete road, three inches. You constructed bridges, and so, I urge you as you go back, do not forget.
“You know there is a context, context of bring the money let us share and context of development. But, the truth is that there is no amount of money shared that will become your legacies. It is those projects, it is those lives you have impacted upon positively that will count for you tomorrow.
“It is important that whoever that wants to contest election is allowed to contest election. Nobody is going to beg anybody not to contest again in Ebonyi state.
“We are advocating for e-voting in our party,(PDP)and to show example to INEC. And I believe strongly that when e-voting comes to be, every leader will face the people.
“We begin to realize that power belongs to God and God manifest himself through the people. And, that is when the process of healing in our country will begin. It is not a question of you sharing money during election and you are brought to power. You don’t come to your constituency until another day of election”, he said.
