Abakaliki: Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has reiterated his total belief in one Nigeria that is built on confidence, equity, justice and love for one another.
Umahi, stated this during the grand finale of the 59th Independence Day Celebration, and Ebonyi at 23, held at Pa Ngele Oruta township stadium, Abakaliki.
Governor Umahi, who commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for his anti corruption war, second Niger bridge, and agricultural programme, which according to him, Ebonyi state was a major beneficiary; assured the people of the state and south-east region that the closure of Enugu International airport was for the safety of the people, explaining that he has always been in constant touch with the President on modalities, funding, and speedy execution of the project.
He reaffirmed his earlier warning against castigating President Muhammadu Buhari,or any other leaders in the country, stressing that such would not add any value to what was being sought.
His words,”Let me assure Ebonyi people and the entire South east that the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport,Enugu was for the safety of our people.
“As the chairman of South East Governors Forum,I had a meeting with Mr President and we have agreed on modalities for quick execution, and of course, comprehensive overhauling of that Airport.
“We are seeking for a special funding with Mr President. And as I travel with him,I will also review with him how far we have gone in the release of the fund for the quick completion of that project.
“We have provided two coaster buses for free transportation,10 brand Hilux vehicles and a new liaison office in Owerri. This will assist our people who travel to use the airport in Owerri, and this will continue as far as Enugu airport remain closed.
“I keep saying that castigating our leaders openly will not add any value to what we seek, rather, our eyes should be on the ball”.
Umahi, who bemoaned how Nigerians are treated outside the shores of the country, called for self reexamination and empirical evaluation, to add value to the culture of the land, adding that, “We indulge in all kinds of manners that devalue the law of other nations, when chasing money by all means.
“I get a lot of calls from our people in Ghana saying a lot of them are about to be sentenced. Some of our people have been sentenced for 1000 years and some 500 years in prison. And so, it is important as Nigerians,we reevaluate our status and our values, because of the way we are treated”.
Umahi, who however, paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the state, assured the people, that his administration would continue to transform the state into an enviable status, and called on the people of Ebonyi state to join hands with him.
