Abuja-The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has called on Nigerian Air Force personnel of the Public Relations and Information, to ensure proper utilization of the advantages offered by the social media for the benefit of the Nigerian Air Force.
Speaking at the Nigerian Air Force Directorate of Public Relations and Information Conference 2017 in Abuja, the CAS said the social media has played a significant role in ensuring that NAF’s activities reach its targeted audience on time.
Expressing dismay over the use of the social media to spread hate speeches and confusion in the society, he noted that the message of hate and violence does not augur well for the development of Nigeria and therefore implored all relevant stakeholders to continue to focus on the use of the social media to inform, educate and entertain, as originally intended.
According to the CAS, “The theme of this Conference, which is “Social Media in Modern Public Relations Practice” is thus apt and timely as it would afford you the opportunity to learn and understand the import of social media in the timely projection of the image of the Nigerian Air Force”.
While noting that the Public Relations Specialty in the Nigerian Air Force has evolved from being a relatively passive specialty to a more dynamic and active one that now plays a significant role in the day-to-day running of the Nigerian Air Force, he tasked the personnel to engage in capacity building in order to remain relevant in the scheme of things.
He further called on the Directorate of Public Relations and Information to use the Conference to reassess its capacity, both human and material, in order to reposition itself for better performance.
Earlier, the Chief of Administration, Air Vice Marshal Lawal Alao expressed confidence that the conference would provide participants with the needed atmosphere to learn more on how best to utilize the social media to the advantage of the Nigerian Air Force, adding also that the social media has evolved to become a fast and effective medium for any organization willing to sell itself to the general public.
He further pointed out that the need to keep the taxpaying public informed of the activities of the Nigerian Air Force in a timely manner, is imperative as he urged them to optimize the resources available to them towards effectively achieving their goals.
Also speaking,the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information(DOPRI) Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya stated that the conference aims to enlighten Public Relations/Information personnel in the Nigerian Air Force on how to optimize the social media to disseminate information to the outside world.
He stressed that the social media provides the tool for real time engagement of the public, adding also that “Public Relations is now about creating value to generate awareness instead of creating awareness to generate value”.
He reiterated the Directorate’s loyalty and determination to work assiduously more than ever before to enable the Chief of the Air Staff succeed in his effort to take the Nigerian Air Force to greater heights.
The Nigerian Air Force Directorate of Public Relations and Information Conference which helps to build capacity of personnel, was last held five years ago.
