The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has commenced the Cascaded Training Plan for Ondo State Governorship Elections scheduled for 10th October, 2020 with the Training of Electoral Officers (EOs).
This is in a bid to sharpen their skill sets in conducting transparent, credible, and acceptable elections for the Ondo State Governorship Elections.
The 3-Day Training with Electoral Officers drawn from the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State, commenced Thursday, August 20, 2020 in Ondo State, and is being organised by the Electoral Institute (TEI) in partnership with International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES).
The Director General of the Electoral Institute, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris in his welcome remarks, enjoined the participants to follow the Framework for the Conduct of Elections during COVID 19 pandemic issued by the Commission, First Supplementary to Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, Voters Code of Conduct (VCC) and National Commission for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols.
He stated that the Manual for Election Officials 2020 is a special edition that underscores the seriousness the Commission attached to the COVID-19 pandemic challenge.
While noting that the task of conducting transparent, credible, and acceptable elections is a responsibility and obligation the participants equally share as Officials of the Commission, he urged all Electoral Officers and their Assistants to give the training all the attention it deserves.
The IFES Country Director, Hermann Thiel in his goodwill message acknowledged the efforts the Commission is making in improving the quality and integrity of the electoral process especially the scanning and transmission of Polling Unit results.
He urged the EOs to internalise the new processes and procedures for effective electoral service delivery.
For his part, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC Ondo State, Ambassador, Dr. Rufus, Oloruntoyin Akeju in his opening remarks, urged participants to be above board while on Election duty.
He noted that the efforts of the Commission in delivering free, fair and credible elections in Ondo State cannot be accomplished without the Electoral Officers, adding that the training is coming at a very auspicious time.
At the end of the Training the participants are expected to understand the Election Processes and Procedures especially the new initiatives under the Commission’s First Supplementary to Regulations and Guidelines and the Commission’s Policy on Conducting Elections in the Context of Covid-19.
The training is also being organized principally to consolidate on the progress so far made towards credible elections as well as to improve on the conduct of elections as exemplified in the 2019 General elections.
