No BVN, No Salary—Umahi Tells Workers

Abakaliki: Civil and public servants in Ebonyi state,have been directed to get their Bank Verification Number(BVN) or forfeit their November/December salaries.

Governor David Umahi gave the order during a Presentation made by the Branch controller, Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), Abakaliki, Mr. Adayi Chris Onah to the state Executive council. 

Umahi, who reacted over the claim by the Central bank branch controller,Mr Onah,that Ebonyi state has exclusion rate of 43.6%,above the national average of 36.8%,and the regional average of 29.3% on Financial Access Performance of the bank,warned both public and civil servants to get their bank verifications.

“Anybody that does not have BVN should not expect salary. No BVN,no salary,whether it is political office holder. The Deputy governor have BVN, I have BVN. Any civil servant that doesn’t have BVN or give incomplete BVN,will not take salary until they have BVN. 

“Commissioner for local government,you are to implement that immediately. No salary for the month of November/December until everybody has BVN”, he directed.

Umahi thanked the Central bank governor,Mr Godwin Emefiele for being very helpful to the state through the programme of Mr President,especially on agriculture, which has made Ebonyi state to be counted among the leading states in agriculture.

He assured the Central bank of Nigeria of the preparedness of the state to partner with the bank, and promised that the state would provide land for the CBN housing scheme,as requested by the CBN Branch controller.

Earlier,the controller,Mr Adayi Chris Onah,had explained that the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN),had since inception in 2010 in Abakaliki,carried out its developmental functions in the state.

He enumerated the functions to include; Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme,which gulped N2 billion in 2016,Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme, N5 billion 2017, Anchor Borrowers Programme, N3 billion for 15,000 farmers in 2017,and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund, N2 billion in 2019. 

The branch controller, however announced that Ebonyi state has been selected in the South East, for a pilot exercise of Account Opening by the Central bank, in all the 13 local government areas of the state.
