Abuja -As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warms up to celebrate it’s 40th anniversary of existence, the Congress has said that it is determined to continue to fight the injustices of Governments inflicting hardship on Nigerians.
This is just as the Congress said that its struggles have paid off, stressing that but for its constant resistance of the unjust policies of government, a liter of fuel would have sold today for more than 500 Naira.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of NLC at 40, Comrade Peters Adeyemi who stated these on Thursday at a Press briefing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the NLC,described the governments as extremely lazy when it comes to the generation of revenue, hence the perennial urge to increase pump prices.
He however noted that full deregulation of the Petroleum downstream sector is the right way to go but can only be implemented when the country has set up adequate refineries to meet local needs.
Comrade Adeyemi explained that the objectives of commemorating the anniversary is in four folds which are; “To celebrate forty years of struggle and perseverance as a working class organisation; highlight Congress history and it’s accomplishment.
“To reflect on the challenges facing the NLC and the wider Labour movement and identify ways these challenges can be addressed; and to articulate an agenda for Congress in the next 10 years as it made marches toward its Golden Jubilee”.
He also disclosed that after the formal celebrations are completed, full attention will be turned to planning in earnest for the relaunch of the NLC Labour College Endowment Fund for the establishment of an NLC Labour College to serve NLC and it’s affiliates.
While noting that the NLC despite its failures, has a preponderance list of successes that have been achieved in enhancement of the benefits that are accrued to the working people of Nigeria, he added that the celebration would be an avenue to take stock of the successes and failures and to prepare themselves for the future and as well come up with strategies on how to succeed in the years ahead.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which was founded in 1978 will be exactly 40 years come Wednesday 28th February 2018.
