The Nigerian Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara(NMLWS) has urged Nigerians who value and respect African freedom to support the just struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom from Moroccan colonization.
This is just as they said, that African colonization of other Africans is despicable, cruel and an abomination, especially since European colonization of Africans has been widely condemned.
The movement’s position was made known on Wednesday in Abuja, by the Coordinator, NMLWS, Dr. Dipo Fashina, at a press conference in commemoration of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) National Day Celebration.
Dr. Fashina, stated that Western Sahara had never been part of the Kingdom of Morocco and so, Morocco has no legal justification, in international law to occupy Western Sahara, adding that Morocco, which is also an African country is trampling upon the sovereignty of the Saharawi people.
According to him, “In 1975, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Morocco (and Mauritania) had no claims of sovereignty, no ownership right over Western Sahara. But Morocco has continued to occupy Western Sahara illegally.
“Morocco does not have the status of an administering power over Western Sahara. Consequently, as a member of the United Nations, Morocco had breached Article 73 of the United Nations Charter according to which all people have a right to self-rule”, he stated.
On the sale of Western Sahara’s phosphate, he stressed that, “All business interest, and government, which trade in phosphate with Western Sahara are involved in illegal trade, since Morocco sells Western Sahara phosphate to them without the consent of the people of Western Sahara- through their own government”.
He further charged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to continue to call on the Nigerian government and businesses to desist from engaging in the illegal trade in phosphate and fish with Morocco stolen from occupied Western Sahara.
The movement also urged African countries to stand firm in defense of the right of the Saharawi people to self-rule, adding also that the admission of Morocco into the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) should be reversed.
On his part, the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, noted that the labour movement will continue to give its solidarity to the people of Saharawi, adding that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. While stating that it is about injustice, he called on every genuine lover of peace around the world to support the movement.
