ABUJA—The Federal Government has on Thursday, pledged to protect every Nigerian, anywhere in the world.
This is just as it said, that as a responsible and caring government, it will do so with all it takes.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Barr. Boss Mustapha, made this pledge in Abuja, at the National Diaspora Day 2019.
The SGF who was the Chairman of the Occasion, encouraged Nigerians in Diaspora to be patriotic and good ambassadors of Nigeria to the world and stressed on the urgent need for unity among diasporan leaders and membership at large
According to him, “Nigeria is a diverse country, our strength lies in the unity of our diversity. Our Diaspora population should therefore unite and engage with the Nigerians in Diaspora commission, with a view to accelerating the development of Nigeria”.
While noting that there is an urgent need to galvanize the remittances by Nigerians in the Diaspora into an investable fund for development, he urged them to engage with Nigeria at the wider Macroeconomic level especially in the organised private sector.
For her part, the Chairman/ CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in her welcome address, disclosed that the high level of financial remittances by the Nigerians in Diaspora, increased from $10 billion in 2003 to over $25 billion to Nigeria alone by December 2018, the highest in Africa with over 25% remittances to Africa coming to Nigeria.
She stated that the increase, shows that President Muhammadu Buhari has taken issue of Nigerians in the Diaspora more seriously than previous Presidents had done.
Speaking on the reason for the National Diaspora Day, Dabiri-Erewa said the Day has been set aside to celebrate and engage Nigerians in the Diaspora, to remind them about the need not to forget their roots.
“They are to always remember the economic survival of their relations back home. To be good ambassadors and project the good name of the country wherever they may find themselves.
“We shall continue to celebrate our heroes and heroines in the Diaspora. It is in this light that I solicit for your cooperation and support in ensuring that the Commission attain its goals in the overall interest of all Nigerians both home and abroad”, she remarked.
The National Diaspora Day with the theme, “The Power of the Nigerian Diaspora for National Development”, is aimed at recognizing the contributions of Nigerians in the Diaspora to National Development, and to review areas requiring improvement, encourage interaction and dialogue on matters relating to the Diaspora.
The 2019 National Diaspora Day, is organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in collaboration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO), the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA) and the Nigerians in Diaspora and Alumni Network (NiDAN).
