Laws on the autonomy of the Legislature and Judiciary are now effective in Ebonyi state.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Uchenna Orji while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the weekly State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday at EXCO chambers, new government house, Abakaliki.
According to Barr. Orji, the laws which had already been assented to by governor David Umahi, were presented to the State Executive Council for appraisal.
Also presented to the EXCO during the meeting was the Cybercrime prohibition law against Fake news and hate speech, which the State Executive Council highlighted on its great importance and applauded the state governor, Engr. David Umahi for giving assent to the laws, said the Information Commissioner.
In his words, “We received a brand new law on the autonomy of the legislature, brand new law on judiciary, and of course, we really highlighted the importance of cybercrime prohibition law.
“For us in Ebonyi state, we are very much proud of our Governor. Ebonyi state is about one of the first states to make a law on the legislature’s autonomy and restore Ebonyi legislative management fund law number 009/2021, and that is in support of the yearnings of the masses, and of course the legislatures that they should be given autonomy.
“So in Ebonyi state, we are very happy that the autonomy of the legislature is now in operation. And for the judiciary, this was in keeping with the yearnings of the masses that with the absolute independence of the judiciary they will be able to do their work without hindrance.
“Also, Ebonyi state is now having a law called Ebonyi state judiciary Funds management law, No.010/2021. Those laws have been presented after they have been assented to by the Chief Executive, our dear governor, Engr.David Umahi.
“We are very happy and we are sure with these, we have absolute separation of powers in line with the principles of the constitution”.
The Information Commissioner, Barr. Uchenna Orji, said the Council further deliberated on the preparations being put in place by the state government on the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Ebonyi state next month to commission some projects.
