Abuja: In a bid to end incessant cases of vehicle theft in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Police Command has reeled out certain anti -theft tips to aid vehicle owners in Abuja secure their vehicles.
According to a statement by the FCT Public Relations Officer, Anjuguri Manzah, the command urged vehicle owners to ensure that anti theft devices such as trackers, alarm and other anti-theft devices are installed in their vehicles.
The FCT Police further urged car owners to always ensure their vehicles are locked with either pedal or steering lock as this it says will make it difficult for thieves to part with their cars.
The Statement also gave other safety tips to include:Parking of cars at well-lit area, especially at night; keeping vehicles locked at all times, even while driving; When parked, keys should not be left in the car. All the windows and sunroof should be closed and valuables such as brief cases, hand bags, etc should not be kept in public view.
While discouraging the habit of leaving original particulars in the car, the statement urged car owners to learn to memorise their vehicle numbers, colour any other vital detail that will aid in identification.
It said “car owners should not park their cars in a position which the car can be easily moved. Drivers should endeavour to leave their glass wind up and apply central door lock, especially when driving in areas poorly lit.
“Do not stop to offer lift to strangers, especially at isolated places. Commercial drivers should be vigilant when carrying passengers at night” it emphasized.
The command, according to the statement, will as a result, embark on vigorous stop and search along the highways and therefore advised members of the public to always have proof of ownership of their cars in their possession to avoid police embarrassment.
