Ghana’s Manasseh Azure Trains The Sight News Reporters on Investigative Journalism

ABUJA: Investigative Journalism is the future of Journalism and for Journalists to remain relevant and impactful in the society, they must embrace investigative journalism.

This was the statement by the Ghanaian award-winning Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, at one-day training organized by Brookesphere Nigeria Limited, Publishers of The Sight News Online for its members of staff and other invited journalists, in Abuja over the weekend.

The training which was an opportunity to learn the nitty-gritty of investigative journalism from a foremost practitioner, gave the participants room to ask questions and get clarifications.

Speaking during the training, Awuni noted that the advent of social media has changed the face of Journalism, as the era of breaking the news is over, adding that telling the story behind the news is the way forward for journalism.

Awuni who shared the story that started his foray into investigative journalism in 2012 and subsequently made him a force to be reckoned with in Ghana, noted that it was the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), a youth employment scandal that would have cost Ghana $500 million if he had not broken the story.

He listed the qualities that an investigation Journalist should possess, to include; Inner motivation and passion, integrity, courage, humility and persuasion.

He further stressed that, “The loyalty of the Journalist is not to his media house, or to the government, but to the public and the pursuit of truth.

“Your story has to be in the interest of the public. Differentiate personal issues from the national issues. You owe allegiance to the country”, he added.

The training, though brief, was an impactful and engaging session that left trainees inspired and motivated to be the voices of truth and integrity in Journalism.

One of the trainee who spoke to this Reporter Mr. Levi Wilson of PLAYTV expressed happiness to have been part of the training, adding that he learnt a lot.

The trainer, Manasseh Azure Awuni is the publisher of and the author of many books such as, “Letters to My Future Wife”, “Voice of Consciousness” and others.
