Abuja- In a bid to ensure effective service delivery with the ever expanding Information and Communication Technology world, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has said that employment of Information and Communication Technology is a strategic tool to enhance Nigeria’s operational and administrative processes.
The CAS who said this on Monday at the maiden Communications Branch workshop 2018 in Abuja, noted that modern warfare is technologically driven, hence the giant strides of the NAF towards infusing technology in its operations.
Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the Communications Branch was excised from the erstwhile Logistics & Communications Branch due to the dynamic and evolving nature of employing technology in modern warfare, adding that the workshop which is the first since the establishment of the Branch, is a fighting force.
“Over the years, we have noticed a gradual decline in expertise, skills and professionalism of the Branch personnel especially with the disengagement from service of our highly trained personnel. Sophisticated equipment are in use today and technological advancement is quite rapid. So personnel must be abreast with current developments if they are to remain relevant” he said.
The CAS also emphasized that several local training has been conducted and a total of 12 officers have been trained in the USA as software developers and 8 others trained in India on cyber security, saying that there are plans to train more.
According to him, “Communications have been expanded with introduction of urban communications system and trained personnel on the basic maintenance of the cameras on NAF’s ISR platform. Navigational aids personnel are also being trained on airfield equipment system maintenance”.
These measures he said will save enormous foreign exchange needed to effect repairs abroad.
On his part, the Chief of Communications, Air Vice Marshal Charles Oghomwen while noting that the Communications Branch is a critical component of NAF operations, added that the ever changing technological development in information and communications gives a wide pool from which the Branch could leverage on to situate itself for value addition to NAF operations.
On what the Branch intend to achieve in the weeks ahead, he said “It is our desire to have a robust outfit that has a bird eye’s view of each nook and cranny of the Nigerian airspace and surrounding border towns of neighboring countries. This will aggregate information and live feeds using software from Directorate of IT, equipped with adequate communications facilities from Directorate of Communications, Radar feeds from Directorate of Radar and Geospatial intelligence from Directorate of Space technology.
“we must keep our dreams and aspirations well ahead of our present equipment holdings and strive hard to meet the ever changing new technologies and better ways of doing things. This is the task which this workshop must address” he said.
The theme of the workshop is “Positioning the NAF’s Communications Branch for Effective, Efficient and Timely Support of NAF’s Operation”.
