Abakaliki: Fumigation of markets and other public places have commenced in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.

Governor David Umahi, flagged off the exercise at the International Market, Abakaliki.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Barr. Kelech Igwe, said the exercise was part of the measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus to the state.

He further explained that the exercise has become imperative in public places to reduce the risk of contracting the deadly disease, which according to him has become a global health emergency.

“This exercise is very important and it shows government preparedness to secure the lives of its citizens which is one of the constitutional mandates of a leader”, he said.

Umahi, called on the people to always maintain environmental hygiene and take other precautionary measures to contain the spread of coronavirus and other dangerous diseases in the state.

In a remark, the Commissioner for Health Dr. Daniel Umezurike, said the exercise has become inevitable, because some diseases are transmitted by insects and wild animals.

On why the exercise was being carried out on Sunday, the Commissioner said it was because of the side effects of the chemicals, and appealed to people coming to the markets and other public places to always cover their noses and mouths.
