A vibrant global economy and economic growth starts with a system that puts the people first.
This was the sentiment expressed at the World Decent Work Day press conference and rally held at the Nigeria Labour Congress Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in his remarks,called on the government to prioritize investment in extended social protection to women, extended leave for care of children and change in work conditions to allow workers achieve work and family balance.
Wabba, who was represented by the vice president, Benjamin Anthony, called on all tiers of government in Nigeria to commence full implementation of the N30,000 national wage.
He also recommended that the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) be reactivated as an instrument of social dialogue and that the Minister of Labour fast track the promised revitalization of the Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Meanwhile, Comrade Emmanuel Okechukwu Ugboaja, General Secretary of the NLC called on the leadership of Jabi Medical Centre to stop the policy of casual labour and contract staff rampant in the institution.
Also speaking Comrade Ezenwa Nwagwu, Chairman of the Labour Civil Society Coalition Abuja, urged Nigerians to take on the responsibility of ensuring that everywhere the rights of worker are respected and their wellbeing is prioritized.
He however decried the lack of attention paid to working conditions of workers employed in religious bodies and administrations all over the country.
