Abuja: There seems to be no end in sight in the barrage of challenges confronting the APC across the country.
Recall that the Kogi, Anambra, and Ogun chapters of the APC have all in recent times, visited the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja to express their grievances one after the other.
The most recent on the list is the leadership of the Enugu Chapter of the party, which was led by the State Chairman of the party,Dr. Ben Nwoye.
Speaking with newsmen at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, Dr. Nwoye accused the Foreign Affairs Minister of allegedly plotting to remove him as Chairman of the Party in that State.
Dr. Nwoye urged the Minister to acquaint himself with the party’s constitution as it is impossible to remove him through the backdoor.
According to him, “We are a party that believe in the rule of law and due process. So to that degree we tried to bring him home and advise him. For example you can’t hold party meeting in your exalted 8th floor office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And you can’t hold a meeting that is outside the constituted authority as the constitution of the party requires and you start to take decisions that will affect the party structure. This is anti party.
“Perhaps he hasn’t taken his time to go through the constitution and perhaps his advisors have decided to mislead him. But he has the final responsibility to study the APC constitution since he wasn’t a member.
While urging the minister to focus on his job as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nwoye insisted that the party in the State will resist any attempt by him to wrongly influence the party.
“So, I don’t think he has taken his time, he is a lawyer, but that you are a lawyer, doesn’t mean you know everything and my advise to him, is to read the constitution of the party”
He said “we know Mr Onyeama was never one of us. And we know that people tried to encourage us to protest when he was appointed. And we resisted it.We didn’t protest, we supported him. I spent my own money dousing those who wanted to protest against a man who was reaping where he did not sow.
” I think he’s being misled and my hope is that he comes back to his functions and do the job he was hired to do. He is not paid to be a party administrator, he is paid to be a foreign affairs minister”, he said
When asked why the Minister opted to destabilise the party in the State, the Publicity Secretary of the party in the State, Kate Ofor said “I think his girlfriend wants to be a senator, so he wants to influence that through the chair.
Mrs. Ofor stressed the State Chapter leadership’s commitment to internal democracy, warning the party not to tow the same path of the lack of internal democracy which was key to the failure of PDP in the last elections.
“The chairman is trying to conduct free and fair primaries in all elections. So the Minister feels like he hasn’t got followership and he cannot tilt the stand of the chairman. So when they saw they cannot influence him with money, they now feel they should remove him and bring in a dissident hungry person; who will be easily enticed with money”.
