LONDON: In an emotional address on Friday, Theresa May has disclosed that she will resign as the British Prime Minister, following her failure to deliver Brexit.
May, who choked back tears while addressing the nation about her imminent resignation in Downing Street, said she will resign as the Conservative party leader on June 7.
With this, the United Kingdom will have a new Prime Minister sometime in July.
According to her “Sadly”, she was not able to persuade MPs to back the deal.
“I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal, sadly I have not been able to do so, I tried three times”, she said. “But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interest of the country for a new PM to lead that effort”.
She announced that she will resign as the leader of the Conservative and Unionist party on June 7, so that a new leader will take over.
She however noted that she will remain UK’s Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
Theresa May who was the second female UK Prime Minister, expressed the hope that she certainly won’t be the last.
