Plateau State Govt Set to Rebrand Sports for Enhanced Performance

The Plateau State Government, says it will reposition sports in the state in order to enhance the performance of athletes.

State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Victor Lapang disclosed this during an interview with Journalists in Jos.

Lapang, noted that the Rescue Administration of governor Simon Lalong, is determined to give sports a facelift in order to attract more youths to the sector.

He explained that apart from giving sports a facelift, issues concerning welfare of athletes and officials is also receiving prompt attention of government.

The Commissioner pointed out that, the State Sports Council, which is responsible for producing athletes that will compete for the state, is given adequate attention in the area of training facilities and equipments to enhance the capacity of both athletes and coaches.

On the ongoing construction work at the Jos Ultra Modern Sports Complex, the Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, stressing that when completed, most sporting activities will take place at the edifice.

He appealed for understanding from members of the general public, especially sports fans, adding, that efforts are being done to ensure that the project is completed sooner rather than later.

In order to discover more athletes for the state, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, disclosed that approval for the staging of the state sports festival to be staged this year has been given by governor Lalong, while his ministry and the state sports council will put their heads together to work out modalities for the games.

Lapang who recently undertook an assessment tour of some parastatals and agencies under his ministry, said other sports will be given priority so as to enhance their performance and avoid athletes defection to other states.

He further stated, that the Rescue Administration will provide a brand new bus to the state sports council in order to alleviate the transportation problems facing the council as efforts are on to improve the welfare of both athletes and coaches as they strive to win laurels for the state.

The Commissioner added, that the state football team, Plateau United Football Club will continue to receive prompt attention from the state government to enable them pick another continental ticket at the end of the season.
