Nigeria continued its impressive showing at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as Success Oyibu booked a place in the women’s 200m final while Miracle Ezechukwu clocked a new personal best of 22.61 seconds in the semifinals.
Oyibu produced a composed performance to win her semifinal in 23.13 seconds, holding off South Africa’s Rume Burger, who finished second in 23.18 seconds.
Her victory secured automatic qualification for the final and strengthened Nigeria’s hopes of another podium finish at the championships.
Ezechukwu also delivered an outstanding performance, running 22.61 seconds to finish second in her semifinal and set a new personal best.
However, her qualification for the final was yet to be officially confirmed as Team Nigeria awaited the final decision on the qualification standings.
The performance adds to Ezechukwu’s growing impact at the championships. She was part of Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team that set a new Nigerian U20 record of 41.91 seconds to qualify for the final, with Ezechukwu producing a strong anchor leg.
The performances by both sprinters further highlight the strength of Nigeria’s emerging women’s sprint programme at the championships.
Their progress comes on the heels of Jessica Oji’s historic gold medal in the women’s shot put, which made her Nigeria’s first athlete to win a global field event title at any level.
With Oyibu already confirmed in the 200m final and Ezechukwu awaiting final confirmation, Team Nigeria will continue its push for further medals in Eugene.
