The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has commended the transformation of the Alaba International Market, describing it as a shining example of Nigerian enterprise, innovation and economic resilience.

Speaking at the Gala and Award Night marking the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba” in Ikoyi, Lagos, the Minister praised the market’s evolution into one of Africa’s foremost centres for electronics and technology, a statement by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Captain Moses Yare noted.

Addressing a distinguished gathering of government officials, business leaders and industry stakeholders, General Musa noted that the newly commissioned modern commercial complexes represent more than physical development; they symbolise the collective vision, perseverance and commitment of the Alaba business community.

He congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, as well as the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their roles in driving the transformation.

The Minister emphasised that Alaba International Market has outgrown the traditional definition of a marketplace, emerging instead as a critical driver of economic growth, job creation and technological advancement in Nigeria.

He further highlighted ongoing efforts within the market to promote quality assurance, support locally manufactured products and combat counterfeit goods, noting that these measures are positioning Alaba as a trusted commercial hub with continental relevance.

Reinforcing the link between security and economic prosperity, General Musa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering dedication to national security and economic stability, adding that sustainable development can only be achieved through strong partnerships between government, businesses and citizens.

The Defence Minister urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs within the Alaba community to sustain their culture of innovation, integrity and excellence.

He encouraged them to continue setting standards that demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to compete globally, while also creating opportunities for future generations.

The event also featured the recognition of outstanding individuals whose contributions have significantly shaped the growth and success of the Alaba International Market.

General Musa concluded by congratulating the entire Alaba business community on what he described as a historic milestone, expressing confidence in even greater achievements in the years ahead.

In his remarks, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Alaba International Market community for its substantial contribution to the economic advancement of Lagos State, noting its strategic importance to commerce, innovation and employment generation.

He praised the resilience and enterprise of the traders, whose sustained efforts have strengthened the market’s reputation within Nigeria and beyond.

The Governor further reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the reconstruction of the road linking the Alaba International Market, emphasising that the project will improve accessibility, enhance the ease of doing business and further stimulate economic activities in the area

The IMEA has had a smooth relationship with the Nigerian Army spanning decades which was brokered by the Honourable Minister of Defence as a young officer.
