Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding two silver medals and a bronze on Saturday to finish Day 9 with a total of 22 medals.
The latest medals came from the men’s 4x100m relay, long jumper Ruth Usoro and judoka Enku Ekuta, bringing Nigeria’s overall tally to 10 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals
The men’s 4x100m relay team of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike produced a season’s best time of 38.12 seconds to claim silver in a dramatic final.
Australia won the gold medal in 38.07 seconds, edging Nigeria by just five hundredths of a second. Although Canada crossed the finish line ahead of Nigeria, the team was later disqualified, confirming Nigeria’s second-place finish.
In the women’s long jump, Ruth Usoro secured another silver medal with an impressive opening leap of 6.87 metres. Her mark remained unbeaten throughout the competition until England’s Jazmin Sawyers produced a winning jump of 6.93 metres.
The medal marked a significant improvement for Usoro, who finished sixth at the previous Commonwealth Games before returning to claim a place on the podium in Glasgow.
Nigeria also celebrated success in judo as Enku Ekuta won bronze in the women’s -63kg category. After suffering a quarterfinal defeat, Ekuta battled through the repechage before defeating Zambia’s Rita Kabinda by ippon in under three minutes to secure the bronze medal.
In the women’s 4x100m relay final, the Nigerian quartet of Miracle Ezechukwu, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Olayinka Olajide and Prestina Ochonogor finished sixth in 43.74 seconds. Jamaica claimed the gold medal in 42.65 seconds, while Canada took silver in 42.76 seconds.
With Saturday’s performances, Team Nigeria concluded Day 9 of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 22 medals—10 gold, seven silver and five bronze.
The National Sports Commission described the performances as another strong outing for Team Nigeria as the athletes continue their pursuit of more medals at the Games.
