Team Nigeria strengthened its medal haul at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday after Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.
Nyong delivered an impressive performance, lifting a combined total of 168kg to finish second and secure another podium finish for Nigeria.
India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze after lifting a combined 167kg.
The Nigerian lifter opened the competition with a best snatch of 75kg, placing third behind Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who lifted 85kg, and Henry, who managed 77kg.
However, Nyong produced a remarkable comeback in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to finish with a total of 168kg, edging Henry by just one kilogram to clinch the silver medal.
In basketball, Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 team suffered a 21-16 defeat to hosts Scotland in their fourth group-stage match. The loss leaves the team with a 1-3 record, with their only victory so far coming against Cape Verde in their opening game.
With three gold and four silver medals, Team Nigeria’s tally now stands at seven medals as the country’s athletes continue their campaign at the Commonwealth Games.
