Team Nigeria has named celebrated para-powerlifter and multiple world champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo as captain of the nation’s contingent to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The appointment underscores the team’s commitment to selecting a leader whose achievements, professionalism, and exemplary character reflect the values of Nigerian sports.
Announcing the decision, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, said the choice was deliberate and merit-based.
“We are intentional about the selection of our team captain. Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience, and excellence throughout her distinguished career. She is a multiple gold medalist, a former world champion, and one of Nigeria’s most decorated para-athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality make her an inspiration to every member of Team Nigeria,” Olopade said.
Oluwafemiayo has built an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s leading para powerlifters, winning multiple Paralympic, World Championship and Commonwealth titles while setting several world records. Her consistency and dominance on the international stage have made her one of Nigeria’s most successful athletes.
Her appointment is also seen as recognition of the immense contributions of Nigerian para-athletes, who have consistently delivered impressive performances at major international competitions. Over the years, para-athletes have accounted for a significant share of Nigeria’s medals at the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, African Games and World Championships.
A four-time world champion and two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Oluwafemiayo further cemented her status among the sport’s elite in 2021 when she won gold at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, setting a world record lift of 152.5kg.
She also captured gold in the heavyweight category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, extending her remarkable record on the international stage.
Team Nigeria will head to Glasgow with a blend of experienced champions and emerging talents across various sports, all aiming to represent the country with distinction.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
The National Sports Commission reaffirmed Team Nigeria’s commitment to excellence, discipline, sportsmanship and the pursuit of podium finishes that will make the nation proud.
