The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in providing a secure and conducive environment for Corps Members and NYSC formations across the country.
General Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, Major General Folusho Oyinlola.
According to the NYSC Director-General, the Scheme’s success is closely tied to the security and stability provided by the nation’s security agencies, stressing that the NYSC cannot effectively fulfil its mandate in an atmosphere of insecurity.
He praised the 3 Division for consistently discharging its responsibilities, noting that the NYSC has never been compelled to cancel an Orientation Course in any state within the Division’s area of responsibility due to security challenges.
The DG disclosed that more than 7,000 Corps Members are currently serving in Plateau State, contributing significantly to the state’s socio-economic development through their various places of primary assignment.
General Nafiu further highlighted the NYSC’s enduring role in promoting national unity, integration and social cohesion since its establishment. He noted that the Scheme has fostered inter-tribal marriages, encouraged cultural exchange and created opportunities for youth empowerment and employment generation.
He also underscored the contributions of Corps Members to critical sectors such as healthcare and education, citing the deployment of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to hospitals, as well as teachers to public schools across the country.
“We seek your continued support in providing an enabling environment for us to effectively discharge our mandate,” he said.
The Director-General added that the NYSC is currently implementing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery nationwide.
In his response, the GOC 3 Division, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commended General Nafiu for the achievements and innovative initiatives recorded since assuming office as the Chief Executive of the NYSC.
He described the Director-General as a worthy ambassador of the Nigerian Army and also praised the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, staff members and Corps Members for their commitment and outstanding performance in the discharge of their responsibilities.
“Whether we like it or not, testimonies abound about the positive impact of the NYSC. Keep up the good work, and I am confident you will continue to take the Scheme to greater heights,” Oyinlola said.
The GOC reaffirmed the commitment of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to ensuring the safety and security of Corps Members serving within its area of responsibility at all times.
