The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta with the successful deactivation of four illegal refining sites in Rivers State.
The operation, carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, took place on 31 May 2026 following credible intelligence on renewed illegal refining activities around the Egboama/Ogbogolo axis in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
According to the Navy, the operation involved a coordinated deployment of anti-crude oil theft operatives supported by aerial surveillance and riverine mobility assets to navigate the difficult creek environment. Drone reconnaissance later confirmed the presence of several concealed illegal refining camps within the area.
During the operation, security personnel uncovered four illegal refining sites equipped with refining ovens, dugout pits, and storage facilities containing an estimated 77,000 litres of substances suspected to be stolen crude oil.
Investigations also revealed that the operators were attempting to revive refining infrastructure previously destroyed during earlier enforcement operations in the area.
The operation led to the deactivation of four illegal refining sites, including three refining ovens, two dugout pits, and a reservoir used in support of the illicit activities.
The Nigerian Navy said the latest discovery highlights the continued efforts of crude oil theft syndicates to resume illegal operations despite sustained military pressure. It added that the success of the mission further demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven surveillance and rapid-response operations under Operation DELTA SENTINEL.
The Navy noted that all identified sites and recovered products were handled in line with established anti-crude oil theft procedures to prevent further economic sabotage.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s critical national assets and economic interests, the Nigerian Navy pledged to sustain aggressive operations aimed at dismantling illegal refining networks across the Niger Delta.
