Art has always been a nation’s silent historian capturing struggles, triumphs, and the collective spirit of its people. At Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, in partnership with the National Gallery of Art, turned to visual art as a vessel of national memory.
The exhibition, themed “Canvas of Identity, Resilience and Renewed Hope,” brought together a rare collection of masterpieces from different generations and traditions, presenting the Nigerian story through brushstrokes, colors, and creative vision.
Speaking at the exhibition, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Mohammed, represented by Mrs. Nike Adeniyi, said the creative economy is central to Nigeria’s cultural renaissance and future growth. He described the exhibition as a reflection of Nigeria’s endurance and shared destiny, noting that art plays a vital role in national development, wealth creation, and international recognition.
“The works on display speak to who we are as a people, diverse yet united, tested yet resilient, hopeful yet determined. Through culture and creativity, we will not only preserve our heritage but also chart a prosperous future for generations to come,” he said.
Director-General of the National Gallery of Art, Ahmed Bashir Sodangi, explained that the exhibition was carefully curated to showcase national identity and collective pride. According to him, the works highlight themes of unity, progress, faith, and patriotism, all of which embody the spirit of Nigeria at 65.
“Each piece is more than art; it is a statement of resilience and a reminder of our cultural strength. This exhibition is both a celebration of where we have come from and a vision of where we must go as a nation,” Sodangi said.
Also speaking, the Director of Cultural Services, National Gallery of Art, Mufu Onifade, emphasized that the exhibition reinforces Nigeria’s position as a hub of creativity on the continent. “Our artists have painted resilience into existence and sculpted hope into permanence. This Canvas of Identity is a living testament to the strength and beauty of the Nigerian spirit,” he remarked.
The exhibition is expected to run throughout the Independence celebration week, offering the public and international guests an opportunity to experience Nigeria’s story through the language of art.
