Abakaliki: Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state and chairman, South East governors Forum, has charged the Igbo sociocultural organisations to champion the unity, peace and progress of the Igbo race, instead of engaging in unnecessary confrontations and selfish interest.

The governor gave the charge while receiving in audience, the Igbo Leaders of Thought, led by Prof. Ben Nwabueze, who paid him a courtesy call at the government house, Abakaliki.

Umahi, who said the number of cultural organisations in Igbo land should not be a cause for worry, provided the single objective of addressing the Igbo welfare was pursued, cautioned against hate speeches, altercations and unnecessary confrontations and stressed that such would be counterproductive.

He recalled his earlier warning to all his political appointees not to castigate any governor or President Muhammadu Buhari, as such would not add any value to his administration.

In his words; “What I have always maintained, is that you cannot confront leadership. That is not what the bible tells us. The bible says, obey those in authority for they do not bear arms in vain.

“So, this idea of confrontation,I am not in support of it. I believe in dialogue. If you are a very good or very bad leader, it is for a very limited time and leaders are made by God.

“Any group that I am hosting that is going to castigate any governor, or any other government or Mr President,I will switch off the microphone. I am not saying it and hiding it. I told my people,if you castigate any governor or President, you leave my cabinet. What will the castigation of other governors or President help us to achieve?

“In every of our hate speech,we must note that we have 12 million Igbos outside our land. These hate speeches is like a coup in disguise. So, we must have patience. What we don’t get cannot be gotten from fight or castigation,”he emphasized.

Umahi, described the Igbo Leaders of Thought as an organisation that is made up of intellectuals who should better provide road map in terms of researching what should be the need of the people in South East, and intervene over crises such as land disputes, to uphold peace in the region.

Earlier in his mission statement, the leader of the team, Prof.Ben Nwabueze, represented by Prof. Ejike Chinweite, had explained that the group came into existence with the aim of actively contributing towards the uplifting of the Igbo nation.

He however paid glowing tribute to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation that has championed the affairs of the Igbo nation for decades.

Prof. Nwabueze commended the governor Umahi for his giant strides in infrastructural development, and called other governors across the country to emulate him, describing Umahi as a wonder-working governor.
