A total of 1,119 suspects were arrested in the recently concluded 2019 general elections, the Nigeria Police Force(NPF) has revealed.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, made the disclosure to Journalists on Thursday in Abuja.
ACP Mba, noted that 323 persons were arrested during the Presidential and National Assembly elections while 796 suspects were arrested in the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly Elections.
He further stated that Akwa Ibom state recorded the highest number of arrests in the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections with a total arrest of 256 Suspects.
According to him, “In the gubernatorial and state houses of Assembly elections, the states that recorded the highest number of arrests is Akwa Ibom state with a total of 256, closely followed by Imo with a total of 117 arrests and Kaduna state with 109”.
He added that these suspects in the police custody includes those that were transferred to them from the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“It is imperative to mention that as investigations proceeds, these numbers may either shrink or increase as the case may be.
“Some of the suspects may eventually be released without charge or charges while some of them may implicate or make statements that may require us arresting further suspects”, Mba remarked.
He stressed that the number of arrests is not sacrosanct and are not cast on an iron wall.
