The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has congratulated working Women and all women on the occasion of the 2018 International Women’s Day, saying that this is indeed the right time to commemorate the political, economic and social achievement of Women.
In a statement on Thursday, the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said, “The Congress felicitates with women globally on this year’s theme which is “Press for Progress”, while calling on all to support this noble course, we wish to reiterate our commitment to continually advocate for the adoption and implementation of policies and strategies that promote gender equality in the workplace, Unions and the larger society”.
He further saluted the NLC National Women Commission on its campaign in support of the ILO Convention to “Stop Gender Based Violence at Work”.
According to Wabba, “It is disheartening to note that violence against women and girls is the most widespread violation of human rights which occurs everywhere; at home, in schools, on the streets and at work, but often treated with impunity.
“We therefore support the ILO Convention on Gender Based Violence for the realization and protection of women’s right, and increased productivity and dignity at work”.
In the same vein, he called for the proper implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015 which prohibits all forms of violence against persons in both private and public life, and provides maximum protection and effective remedies for victims as well as punishment for offenders.
