We Were First To Form Joint Security Outfit—South East Governors

Abakaliki: The South East Governors’ Forum says they were the first to form a joint Security outfit in Nigeria.

The chairman, South East Governors’ Forum, and governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi, stated this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the forum’s meeting held in Enugu.

The meeting which was also attended by some Igbo leaders,including the President,Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, and the clergy, noted that their joint security outfit was formed in July 2019, while Committee on the joint security outfit was inaugurated in August same year.

Umahi, said the leaders have written the Federal Government in this regard and at appropriate time, will invite the federal government to know the details of the security programme, just as he announced that they were satisfied with the arrangement put in place in the enactment of the law to back up the programme in Houses of Assembly across the zone.

According to the communique read by the chairman of the Forum,governor David Umahi, security of lives and property was uppermost in their agenda,hence the setting up of Vigilante, and Forest guards in all the five states of the region.

The communique reads in parts,”South East Governors’ Forum receives brief on Joint security committee and noted as follows;

“That South east governors formed their joint security on July 28, 2019,and inaugurated our Committee on Joint security outfit on 31st August, 2019.

“We needed to say this because a lot of our people say we should adopt the same programme like the South West. We said no, we are the first in the entire Nigeria to form our own joint security outfit.

“Forum has written the Federal government in that respect and at appropriate time,we will be inviting the federal government to know the details of our security programme.

“But, we wish to assure our people that we have state vigilante and Forest guards in all the south east state who work with security agencies daily in our various communities for the protection of lives and property”.

The forum noted with satisfaction,the quality and progress of work at Enugu International Airport, Enugu-Port Harcourt Federal Highway, and the 2nd Niger Bridge, and commended Mr President for the level of fundings on these projects.

The Forum also commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state for making more land available and his commitment in the overall success of the airport project, together with the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika; and  Chairman,Works Forum Committee, Engr.Chris Okoye for efficient supervision and monitoring.

On the second Niger Bridge, the forum appreciated the managing Director, National Social Insurance Authority(NSIA), Mr. Uche Orji, for making the second Niger Bridge a reality.
