Abuja-The Director Defence Information (DDI), Major General John Enenche has called on Nigerians to disregard the mentions of coup plot by some quarters, stressing that they are mere unconfirmed assertions.
Enenche while addressing Defence Correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, said that all fears about coup should be set aside as the contemporary Nigerian Military is abreast with the best international practices in governance which is Democracy.
Furthermore, the Director noted that the Armed Forces, particularly the Army is committed to performing their constitutional roles. “If there are signs of actions that point to likely breaches of Military code as it were, cautions or warnings are issued with possible investigations following”, he added.
On the issue of some military personnel hobnobbing with politicians for undisclosed political reasons, he admonished the media to exercise some patience to allow for administrative procedures which includes military enquiry and possible investigation to take its course as it will be very unhealthy to serve the general public with false information which will require retracting afterwards.
While giving clarification on the issue of soldiers attached to some politicians, the DDI stressed that “if there is any ‘politician’ that you see military men attached to, I think it’s by the reason of the fact that he occupies an appointment that entitles him to that, and that is the Honourable Minister of Defence, that’s all or the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) of the Armed forces”.
Enenche noted however that anything military around politics or Politicians apart from the Commander-in-Chief or the Minister of Defence must be accompanied by the Nigerian Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The DDI reiterated that Nigerians should not be afraid of any coup as the armed forces of Nigeria in its entirety is solidly behind and loyal to the Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in complete subordination to Civilian rule.
